U2

I'm reposting part of a post I wrote a few years ago because the post discusses conservative politician Jesse Helms, who passed away today. Helms had met Bono, lead singer of the the rock group U2 and the singer recalls their meeting about AIDS. Never mind the quote within a quote (hehe):
I saw an interview of Bono when he was discussing AIDS on the PBS show Frontline ... Bono was talking about how he was able to convince hard-core, right-wing conservative Jesse Helms to support the fight against AIDS. Since I can't do Bono justice by paraphrasing him, here's his direct quote from Frontline's website:
Christ only speaks of judgment once, and oddly enough, it's in regard to the poor. I think it's Matthew 23. It's the famous lines: "I was naked and you clothed me. I was a prisoner and you visited me." And then they say to Christ: "What are you talking about? You weren't. I was sick, and you came to me." And he says: "No, I wasn't. But as much as you do this to the least of these, you do it unto me." And the implication is also in the reverse, if you don't do it. So that's a very powerful piece of Scripture, and he [Helms] was very moved. Even emotionally, he kind of welled up.
I was impressed with Bono's persuasion skills. It just goes to show that the best way to convince someone of your point of view is not with a hammer, but by explaining it through the other person's eyes.
That post was about U2's singer. Now, let's talk about their guitarist, The Edge. As it turns out, U2 can now play with U2 (harhar) ... if you play the guitar anyway. I found this link with backing tracks of U2's songs. You can pretend you're The Edge and jam away with these tracks. Here's a great video of a guy doing just that:The guy uses lots of gear to capture The Edge's sound. I'm more of an acoustic guitar guy so I use the backing tracks but without the fancy echoes, distortions, pedals, etc. that The Edge uses. It's still a great way to practice the guitar though ... and definitely much better than those guitar video games. ;)

That's a cool clip !Looks pretty much 85% are standard chords save for the last part. I love watching ordinary dudes showing how to play great songs on guitar.

There's this one dude on YOuTube who plays "TORN" by Creed on his acoustic and you can literally sing to it ! The great part is you see how he does it :)

That's you playing the guitar on that link, right? I think that's cool. :) I admire people who can play any kind of instruments, because I can't play one. I can't even recognize one note from another. :)

Thanks, dimaks. :D

bw, I didn't look up what chords the Edge uses, but it sounded like just three chords so that's what I played. :)

That's what's great about youtube -- you can check out a lot of great musical talents.

Thanks, niceheart.

You must've picked up some listening skills when your son plays the flute, right? :)

I've always loved The Edge. His name sounding like a wrestler aside, he is an awesome musician, and he has a sense of humor.

I wouldn't know a guitar chord from a random placement of fingers on the frets, but I admire people who do know.

Bono is awesome. I like how he is the quintessential philanthropist. He has been doing charity work waaaay before the other celebrities did so.

Alternati, you're right. The Edge does sound like a wrestler name. hehe

The fact that Bono got a conservative administration to fund AIDS drugs is an achievement in itself. Awesome indeed.

hmm, nice playing! my hubby filled up my external HD with clips like this but I don't think he has this one. I'll tell him I found this! hehe

like bingskee, I tried learning to play guitar years ago, and it was a pity cuz after i got all the chords memorized, I never did learn the art of strumming... all i can play is the first 10 notes of the intro of 'no arms'... :-( :)

Ganda, are you talking about my video or Ralqh's? hehe

I never heard of No Arms, so I looked it up on youtube and all I got were videos about people with no arms. :-o But seriously, about the guitar, practice makes perfect as they say. :)
